Restorative Headstone Cleaning: A Hands-On Preservation Workshop
About this Event
Another date added: Oct 17th (Rain date: Oct 18)
Join Black Georgetown Foundation for a hands-on preservation workshop at Mount Zion and Female Union Band Society Cemeteries.
Our headstones help tell the stories of the people buried here. Caring for these markers is part of preserving Black Georgetown’s history and honoring the lives they represent.
We’ll begin by exploring the materials used to make gravestones, how their designs changed over time, and the meaning of their symbols and inscriptions. We’ll also discuss why we preserve historic cemeteries and the memorials within them.
Then we’ll learn by doing. Participants will assemble preservation tool and supply kits, learn gravestone conservation best practices, and apply those techniques to selected markers with guidance from the workshop facilitator.
Join us to learn preservation practices you can put to use while helping care for this historic burial ground.
Please register for either Oct 10th or Oct 17th.
