Do you hear it? -the hum of urban landscapes, the echoes of history embedded in architecture, and the subtle ways sound shapes our perception of space and time.
This newspaper is a culmination of artistic tests and experiments in the intersections of sound, public space, and the built environment—a dialogue between art, architecture, and collective imagination.
Within these pages, you’ll find essays, interviews, speculative obituaries and diagrams tracing the contours of imagined and real sonic spaces. You’ll encounter the faint ticking of forgotten clocks, the rhythms of industrial transformation, and voices—both human and more-than-human—that inhabit our shared environments.
What happens when we slow down to listen? What stories emerge from the silence, and what futures can we imagine when we tune into the sound of the present?
Through these explorations, PUBLIC RETREAT invites you to navigate the unseen, to follow sound as it curves through time and space, and to reimagine the urban fabric—not as a static structure, but as a vibrant, ever-shifting sonotope.
Welcome dear explorer. Turn the page. Do you hear it?

PUBLIC RETREAT is an interdisciplinary, practice-based art project centered around the
exploration of our common auditory urban environment and the human, non-human and
more-than-human experiences of and relations to it.
PUBLIC RETREAT makes site and context specific sound-, radio-, visual-, and text-based works, workshops and listening events. The project is led by composer and sound artist
Nicole Cecilie Bitsch Pedersen (DK), visual artist and writer Jo Mikkel Sjaastad Huse (NO) and architect and artist Johanna Fager (SE), with an international network of collaborators and conversation partners engaged. PUBLIC RETREAT’s sound walk, The Graveyard Digression was shortlisted for walk · listen · create’s Sound Walk September Awards 2024.
PUBLIC RETREAT began their collaborative work in 2022 with the art and architect project NYA LÖVHOLMEN, which included semi-utopian citizen proposal for an entire new neighborhood; an absurd elevator pitch for a subterranean earth scraper to house all of mankind; the locally distributed NYA LÖVHOLMEN MAGAZINE; and a radio show about city planning, voiced in part by an enthusiastic bird. NYA LÖVHOLMEN was nominated for the Architects Sweden’s 2023 Critics Award.

Based on the project NYA LÖVHOLMEN - PUBLIC RETREAT was invited to partake in the new Architecture Triennale at Färgfabriken during the fall of 2024 with the solo exhibition “PUBLIC RETREAT - on fire”.
The "Platform Deep Dive" initiative positions Platform Stockholm as a central hub for artistic reflection on the ongoing transformation of Lövholmen from an industrial area to a residential hub. Each year, the program invites an artist to create site-specific work that captures the effects of these changes on local artists, the community, businesses, and residents. Public Retreat is the first artist entry invited to inaugurate this program.
We aim to continue this initiative throughout the entire redevelopment phase of Lövholmen.
