Rejoice! A Baroque Celebration
JS Bach's Missa Brevis in A is one of his series of four Lutheran Masses, which include a Kyrie and Gloria but not most of the Catholic Latin mass movements. Although overshadowed by his monumental Mass in B minor, this short work shows Bach's brilliance in transforming some of his strongest cantata writing with refined counterpoint and his characteristic musical architecture.
Lovers of Bach will also delight in hearing his most famous Cantata, Wachet auf (known in English as Sleepers Awake), which tells the story of the wise and foolish maidens awaiting their heavenly bridegroom.
The second half of the concert belongs to GF Handel, who, as "Composer of the Musick to the Chapel Royal," wrote his Dettingen Te Deum thanking God for the victory of the British over the French in the 1743 Battle of Dettingen. This was the last time a reigning British monarch (George II) ever personally led troops into battle. The music is Handel at his celebratory best (or as one reviewer calls it, "a Handelian tub-thumper), with trumpets and oboes and triumphant choruses.
Soloists include soprano Tarané Noruzi, mezzo-soprano Grace Vermette, and bass Kyron Basu.
