Seedy Saturdays are annual community events held across Canada that celebrate seed saving, gardening, and local food security. These gatherings provide a platform for gardeners, farmers, and eco-conscious individuals to buy, sell, or exchange seeds. These events are part of a larger movement to promote sustainable gardening practices, preserve seed knowledge, and strengthen local food systems. They offer a valuable opportunity for community members to learn about seed saving, gardening, and the earth. Like many other cities across Canada, Regina hosts its own Seedy Saturday on the first Saturday of March each year. The next event is happening on March 7th, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Riddell Centre at the University of Regina. We invite you to join us with your family and friends to buy local seeds and other garden products.
We have two hands-on workshop lined up:
1. Composting and Seed Starting with Kim Ross
12 pm at Riddell Centre 286
First Part: Organic matter in the form of compost helps to build healthy soil in several ways! Compost becomes the glue that holds soil particles together to help form a structure in the soil that can hold moisture and air. It is a slow release fertilizer and helps to feed the soil food web. How can you begin to generate your own compost with organic household waste and garden waste? In this class we will talk about the benefits of compost and how to start building your first compost pile!
Second Part: Seeds are living entities that contain everything a tiny seedling needs to germinate. Seeds from different plant families may have different requirements to germinate. Some are easy to sprout, some are incredibly hard and some only want to be direct seeded! In this class, Kim will demonstrate how you can easily start your own seeds, care for the young seedlings and transplant them out at the appropriate time!
2. Plan Your Garden
2 pm at Riddell Centre 286
Ensuring a successful year in the garden takes a bit of careful planning but once you have a plan created, it’s easy to execute year after year! Kim will explain how to choose a variety that works in your growing zone and how to design a crop rotation that works in your space. Once you know all of the tricks to planning, you will be able to build a garden that produces well and minimizes insect and disease pressure!
