A true All Star band will shine in Athens, at the Half Note between 5th and 8th December. A group of four top jazz stars and good friends, with long collaboration history with one another over the last 35 years, reunites for a European tour and make its presence in Greece, at the venue the band members have great recollections from. Bassist Reggie Washington, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, guitarist David Gilmore and drummer Gene Lake have some amazing music in store for us in the days to come!
A New Yorker, Reggie Washington is the younger brother of the legendary drummer Kenny Washington. After drifting in music playing from percussion to cello, he ended up playing contrabass and gradually the electric bass, influenced by his brother’s best friend Marcus Miller, who used to hang out in their home. Reggie’s musical idols on bass, except Marcus, were Sam Jones, P. Chambers, O. Pettiford & S. LaFaro. Washington's long-standing collaboration with Steve Coleman is the one that established him, along with appearances with Br. Marsalis' Buckshot LeFonque project, Roy Hargrove's RH Factor group, Cassandra Wilson's band, L. Bowie, etc. Since the mid-2000s, he has made many personal and successful recordings, the first of which is live with his friends Ravi Coltrane & Gene Lake on tenor and drums respectively. Reggie Washington is one of the most prominent jazz bassists of the era, just as Ravi Coltrane is one of the greatest saxophonists of our time.
The 60-year-old Grammy nominated saxophonist, bandleader and composer Ravi Coltrane, is the second-born son of mythical John Coltrane and legendary pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane! Above all, however, he is a star jazzman and leader on his own. Born in the greater New York area, Ravi was named after Indian music’s legend Ravi Shankar, who was collaborating with his father those days. He grew up and studied music in California, under the influence of his mother. In ’97, after having already taken part in about 30 recordings, he made his first album as leader and others followed. He collaborated with St. Coleman, T. Blanchard, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, etc. while he is co-leading Saxophone Summit band with D. Liebman and J. Lovano. Ravi is leading the efforts for the renovation of the historic Coltrane family home in Dix Hills - New York, the Spiritual Home of Jazz, as it is called. After all, it is the house he was born at and where his father composed the famous “Love Supreme” tune at! Coltrane has become a great producer too and he’s produced guitarist David Gilmore’s albums, among others.
Leading guitarist David Gilmore - born and raised in Massachusetts - studied in New York, the scene of which he emerged as a sought-after session musician and bandleader. In Greece, we first saw him alongside legend Wayne Shorter but his collaborations include legend Stanley Clarke, Steve Coleman, Christian McBride, Randy Brecker, Cindy Lauper, Josh Stone or Wynton Marsalis among many others. His guitar playing has been compared to that of George Benson’s or Wes Montgomery’s!
The amazing drummer Gene Lake is also the son of a legend, the great saxophonist Oliver Lake! The St. Louis-born all-around drummer, who came to New York at a young age, studied alongside Pheeroan AkLaff and later attended Berklee. In addition to Steve Coleman, Gene has collaborated with Joe Zawinul, Marcus Miller, D’Angelo, Cassandra Wilson, Henry Threadgill and many R&B and jazz/rap stars.
This incredible band of jazz stars and good friends, will thrill us at Half Note Jazz Club from 5th to 8th December with their original compositions, with standards but even more so with their unique groove, as they only know how!
