Red Baraat is a pioneering band from Brooklyn, New York. Conceived by dhol player Sunny Jain, the group has drawn worldwide praise for its singular sound, a merging of hard driving Punjabi rhythms with elements of hip-hop, jazz and raw punk energy. Created with no less a purposeful agenda than manifesting joy and unity in all people, Red Baraat’s spirit is worn brightly on its sweaty and hard-worked sleeve. The band’s 2017 NPR Tiny Desk Concert is touted as the #8 best of all time by Vulture Magazine.
Los Pirañas is Bogota’s most powerful musical triumvirate, a power trio made up of guitarist Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers), drummer Pedro Ojeda (Romperayo) and bassist Mario Galeano (Frente Cumbiero, Ondatropica) -
The three musicians have known each other since high school and have done more to transform Colombian music than pretty much anyone from their generation - hopscotching from roots music to avant-experiments and disseminating their vision around the world.
As a project, Los Pirañas’ music may be closest to their dark psychedelic rock past, but as such, it is also the most accessible to indie rock fans. If cumbia, champeta and tropicalia are still at the heart of the music, the context is very much that of a psychedelic guitar trio.
While the band performs in Europe somewhat regularly, they have never toured the US .
