Please join me at the Opening Reception for my solo exhibition of life-size collage portraits honoring my ancestors entitled Portraits of My People on Friday April 11 from 5-9pm (coinciding with Arts Night Out) at Barn Door Gallery, Northampton Center for the Arts, 33 Hawley St, Northampton, MA 01062. An Artist Talk will take place that same night at 7:30pm in the gallery. The gallery is fully accessible and admission is free.
There will also be a Community Conversation entitled “Italians and Whiteness in the United States” on Saturday April 19 from 4-5pm in the gallery featuring artist Mark Guglielmo, Jennifer Guglielmo (Professor of History, Smith College), and Heshima Moja (Musician, Composer, Sonic Architect).
The show will run from April 2nd to April 30th. Normal gallery hours are Wed-Sat 11am-7pm, closed Sun, Mon, and Tue.
A word about the series: Combing through hundreds of old, black and white, archival and family photographs, Guglielmo drew inspiration from his childhood growing up in New York, and from those that came before him. Themes of memory, identity, family, and belonging permeate the work. From a large Italian American family, Guglielmo made this new series to pay homage to his beloved grandparents Grace and Angelo, the children of Southern Italian immigrants, who raised 11 children and always held space for him and his siblings. With this new body of work, Guglielmo engages Italian American identity to spark greater awareness and deeper conversations about some of the most salient issues of our time.
