This month, we’re reading The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden — a mesermizing, Booker Prize-shortlisted novel that combines psychological suspense, family drama, and a slow-burning romance. Set during a sweltering summer in the Netherlands in 1961, the novel follows Isabel, a solitary woman whose carefully ordered life is disrupted when her brother's free-spirited girlfriend comes to stay. As tensions simmer within the confines of the family home, buried resentments and long-hidden secrets begin to surface. Atmospheric and elegant, The Safekeep explores memory, inheritance, belonging, and the stories families tell themselves about the past.
We will meet in person in the loft at our store at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $18.99, which includes a copy of The Safekeep to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.

Yael van der Wouden is a writer and a teacher. The Safekeep, her debut novel, was a finalist for the 2024 Booker Prize and has been longlisted for the 2025 Aspen Words Literary Prize. It was also named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a best book of the year by The Washington Post, Time, The Economist, Kirkus Reviews, The Times (London), The Independent, BookPage, and others. She lives in Utrecht, Netherlands.
