After moving to a new town, troubled teen Jim Stark is meant to have a clean slate, but being the new kid comes with its own challenges. While searching for stability, Jim bonds with a troubled classmate, Plato, and falls for local girl Judy — who just happens to be dating neighbourhood tough Buzz. When Buzz confronts Jim and challenges him to a drag race, the newcomer’s real troubles begin.
Superbly crafted by director Nicholas Ray, the film shifts the focus on antisocial behaviour from the city slums to the suburbs, capturing the teenage rebellion against the American Dream. Fully charged with melodramatic intensity, Rebel also weaves in a striking homoerotic undercurrent.
