Please join us in welcoming Dr. Federico Reade who will be honoring us with a reading of his new book, Feet of Clay, Spirit of Fire: Corridos de las Mercedes de Nuevomexico 1856-1969, an analysis of the New Mexico style of corridos, or ballads.
The Alianza corrido cycle embodies the elements of the Heroic Journey, beginning with the call to adventure and continuing through the initiation of the adventure, its coalescence, its fragmentation, and the end of the hero’s journey. The sociopolitical corrido is a mirror that reflects the developmental understanding of repression under dominance and serves as the ideal mechanism of expression for the disempowered. The corrido is the perfect format for the narrative; it is reflective, bears the truth values in semantic intent, yet is poetic in technique.
