In recent years, rural and peasant issues have become one of the important topics of reflection not only in Polish humanities, but also in broadly understood culture. The exhibition Quite an Ordinary Village fits into this trend.
What is a modern Polish village like?
At our exhibition, it is quite ordinary – that is, experienced by people associated with it. That is why we are not looking for objective answers, but we give voice to people associated with the everyday life and ordinariness of the countryside. People who live there and paint specific images of the village through the prism of their experiences and problems that are important to them. The exhibition will also include a photographic essay by Michał Sierakowski – a record of Polish countryside landscapes. A diverse and colorful landscape was created, which on the one hand confirms our visual habits, and on the other, puzzles and surprises.
To paraphrase the words of Brian Porter-Szűcs, whose title of the book about Poland became the inspiration for the title of the exhibition, we consider the Polish countryside to be really interesting, not because it is an extraordinary place, but precisely because it is so ordinary.
According to Porter-Szűcs, the ordinariness of Poland lies in the fact that it is not some “alien land with a strange history”, but a space that was and still is “at the junction of all the trends characterizing the modern world”. If Poland is ordinary in this sense, then the Polish countryside is also ordinary, perhaps not at the crossroads of all the trends of the modern world, but certainly many of them.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a discussion panel ART ABOUT THE VILLAGE – ART FROM THE VILLAGE – ART IN THE VILLAGE in the context of the so-called folk
phrase.
