What's it like to be a queer parent

Join us at Les Amarres for a celebration of love, diversity, and creativity. This in-person event will showcase beautiful art pieces that highlight the unique experiences of queer parenthood. Come and immerse yourself in a world of emotions, and stories that redefine the meaning of family. Let's come together to support and uplift queer artists and their powerful narratives.

In the UK almost 2 million people identify as LGBTQI+. According to ONS, in 2018 there were 232,000 same-sex couple families living in the UK, an increase of 53.2% in just 3 years since 2015. This is such a significant increase in shaping our culture. As a queer photographer, I felt compelled to interview and photograph queer, gay, lesbian, transgender and non-binary individuals to capture their experience of parenthood.

Visual representation of queer communities is often limited to predictable photos of queer parties, pride parades, or narratives of suffering, loss and rejection. Mainstream media is slow to reflect the diversity of family structures and queer families. By focusing on this social issue, this project seeks improve visibility of LGBTQ+ families, challenge prevailing norms of a family and contribute to a broader understanding of diverse family structures.
