About this Event
"A Thousand Layers and A Thousand More"
YUYU’s solo exhibition at Artverse Paris delves into the themes of time, memory, and how experiences shape our perception of the world. YUYU explores the fluidity of memory, using it as a lens to understand the passage of time. The inspiration stems from cognitive psychology studies that describe memory as a dynamic reconstruction rather than a fixed archive. This exploration is visualized through a reinterpretation of William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s painting, Les Oreades. Forty self-portraits symbolize significant life moments, each representing emotions like happiness, anxiety, or loss. The exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the evolving nature of memory, as time alters our understanding of past events.
The Installation
The centerpiece of the exhibition is an immersive installation composed of six asymmetric translucent polyester fabrics, each hanging separately from the gallery ceiling. This layered design creates a three-dimensional experience, allowing the audience to “walk through” time, experiencing how memories merge, blur, and overlap. The foggy and distorted aesthetic mirrors how the mind processes memories over time—sharpening some details while fading others. This installation illustrates how life is a series of interconnected layers, where each moment influences the next, like an archaeological dig that uncovers history piece by piece.
Artworks
In addition to the central installation, 15 derivative artworks presented in a 9:16 format further explore themes of memory and time. These pieces act as fragments, showcasing memories in different states—clear, blurred, and distorted—highlighting how past experiences continue to influence the present.
