A Community-Led Panel and Facilitated Discussion

Featuring: Kai Cheng Thom, Catherine Hernandez, Anjula Gogia, Hana Shafi
and TPL staff
About this Event

Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer + (2SLGBTQ+) communities are facing increasing backlash. Queer and trans people are once again facing attempts to push them out of public space, and many struggle to trust that they are truly welcome in society. In recent years, groups espousing opinions perceived by many 2SLGBTQ+ communities and allies as discriminatory and offensive have rented space in Canadian public libraries to meet and hold public events.
How can we as a society create spaces for learning, connection, and growth where everyone is welcomed, included and supported? How do libraries support free expression for all while also engaging Indigenous and equity-deserving groups and amplifying their voices?
Join this thought-provoking and healing panel discussion and facilitated conversation on reclaiming the library as a place where queer and trans people belong. This conversation will also include discussion of the protest of TPL started by queer, trans, and ally writers in 2019 and optional healing expressive arts activity led by visual artist Hana Shafi (Frizz Kid) for audience participation.

Facilitator:
· Kai Cheng Thom, acclaimed trans author, professional mediator, and expert facilitator
Speakers:
· Catherine Hernandez, Award-winning Canadian author
· Anjula Gogia, Manager, Another Story Bookshop
· Courtney Cardozo (she/her), TPL Senior Services Specialist, 2SLGBTQ+ Community Connections & Partnerships
· Alex Carruthers (she/her) and Leesa Tossios (she/her), TPL Senior Managers
