Join us for a workshop about art-based methods in various queer and feminist social science research. The workshop will be led by Danielle Roberts and Sophie Raeheme.

Danielle Roberts will focus on how the organization Alliance for Choice has used DIY art like placard, selfies and zine making, the benefits I see as a non artist. Alliance for Choice is a group that was set up in 1996, to campaign for barrier free access to abortion, comprehensive, unbiased sex education for young people and an end to the harassment of people using reproductive health services. One creative way projects at Alliance for Choice have engaged people in policy making discussions is through the use of Zines. Participants will learn more about using zines as a methodology for communicating with audiences, and be invited to make their own.

Sophie Raehme will speak about Queering Listening to Images. In her work she explores what it might mean to queer the practice of listening to images. Drawing on Black feminist and decolonial approaches to listening, participants will engage with posters and images connected to searches for disappeared persons in Colombia, centring LGBTQI+ lives and experiences.

Through a short arts-based exercise combining listening and poetic response, we will ask: What becomes perceptible if we listen to visual material in memory practices rather than only look at it? Attending to present absence, historical silences, territorial memory and affective relations, we will explore listening otherwise as a practice of sensing what may exceed the immediately visible and ask whose bodies and territorial memory becomes perceptible and/or audible, what remains unheard, and under what conditions.

The session connects these questions to queer, feminist and decolonial knowledge praxis, and to the possibilities and tensions of researching and representing queer lives affected by conflict.

The session includes lunch and the screening of the 30 minute film the Wholly Trinity: Abortion, Art and Activism in Ireland.

All welcome, however registration is limited. Please note the workshop takes place at the University of Manchester at the Arthur Lewis Building, 2nd floor, 2.16/2.17.
