About this Event
We are excited to host a collaboration between El Viejo Central American Kitchen and District Spanish for an immersive, bilingual culinary experience celebrating the rich history and delightful flavors of pupusas! This engaging class will offer a blend of history, hands-on cooking, and a delicious tasting session.
El Viejo's father-and-son chefs and owners, Juan and Henry, will share their techniques from their Washingtonian Top 100 restaurant to help us all learn to make homemade pupusas and curtido. District Spanish's owner and teacher, Gerardo, will provide a gastronomical history and ensure the class is fit for Spanish and English speakers of all levels.
The class will focus on pupusas and curtido from El Salvador with influences from Nicaragua, as all three instructors are of Salvadoran heritage. Come explore the pupusabilities!
Instructors, El Viejo Chefs Juan and Henry
El Viejo is a casual Central American kitchen that celebrates their roots and highlights the region's rich culinary traditions. The term "el viejo" translates to “the old man," a nickname Henry grew up using for his father, Juan. El Viejo is also the name of his mother’s hometown in Chinandega, Nicaragua, giving the restaurant a deeply personal connection to both sides of his family. Chef Juan immigrated from El Salvador over 40 years ago and has worked in the restaurant industry ever since. Over time, he built a career that led to opening his own restaurant, Ay! Jalisco, in 1998. In October 2023, the family opened El Viejo Central American Kitchen to honor his legacy and continue the story.
Translation and History by District Spanish, Gerardo Domínguez
District Spanish was established in 2016 by El Salvadoran Gerardo Domínguez and has become a space for growing and making meaningful connections to learn Spanish. District Spanish is a Spanish education center that encourages and motivates students to proactively reach their language learning objectives.

Tickets
KAMA DC is a volunteer-run non-profit and relies solely on individual donations. Tickets for this event include materials for attendees to make their own pupusas, venue fees, and paying instructors for their time, skills, and knowledge.
