Public Workshop on Coastal Law and Policy in Prince Edward Island

East Coast Environmental Law welcomes you to join our free, public workshop on coastal law and policy in Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 from 6:00-8:30PM at the Prince Edward Island .

Our workshop will feature presentations by East Coast Environmental Law staff lawyers Mike Kofahl and Tina Northrup, along with guest speakers Bryson Guptil and Donald Jardine, on a range of topics covering coastal law issues on the Island, including:

· environmental laws dealing with coastal protection,

· municipal and provincial rules for coastal development,

· public coastal access, and

· law reform dealing with climate change mitigation and adaptation along the coast.

The objective of our workshop is building capacity and sharing our knowledge with the public, community organizations, and legal practitioners about coastal legal issues in Prince Edward Island.

Donald Jardine is a climate researcher and sessional lecturer with the University of Prince Edward Island.He has a BSc in geology from UNB and an MSc in Environmental Studies (Climate Change Indicators) from UPEI. He has worked in the climate change field for over 15 years and has documented the impact of various storms such as Dorian and Fiona on the coastal areas of Prince Edward Island. He co-authored the State of the Coast Reports written by UPEI for the Government of Prince Edward Island in 2023 .

Bryson Guptil is an avid walker and has been a member of the Board of Directors of Prince Edward Island Trails Inc. (Island Trails) since 2007.In 2019, he created the Island Walk, a 700 km walking trail around the circumference of PEI. Since then, The Island Walk has attracted more than 1,000 walkers and cyclists from Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere.In September, 2024, Bryson was selected by the PEI Seniors' Secretariat to receive the 2024 Senior Islander of the Year Award.
