Scarborough & Ryedale Astronomical Society hold regular public stargazing at the Low Dalby Astronomy Centre in Dalby Forest held during the autumn and winter months. Come and see the stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies under one of the darkest skies in the country. The site of the society observatories was awarded the Milky Way Class of the UK Dark Sky Discovery Award in January 2013 and is now part of the North Yorks Moors Dark Sky Reserve.
Please wrap up warm and bring along a torch (preferably with a red filter to preserve yours & others night vision).
Please avoid shining white light torches near the observatories, during the event or at other’s faces, as it will take 20 minutes for eyes to readjust to the dark.
Take extra care in the car park also.
Unfortunately, if the weather happens to be unsuitable for stargazing, this event will now be cancelled.
Previously we would run a virtual tour of the night sky indoors, but Forestry England now wish to charge £139 for the use of a room for 90 minutes, every time we run a free event, which is clearly not sustainable for a charity running 1 event per month.
We are sorry for the uncertainty this causes if it is likely to be cloudy, we have run free events in Dalby since for nearly 20 years but Dalby are now making it nearly impossible to do, as they seek a profit from any activity run in the forest.
The Event itself is FREE however Forestry England still charge on exiting the forest – charge is reduced (QR code supplied at event).
