Public Art In Practice for Westchester County
About this Event
Public art has been growing in Westchester County for years, with investment from both the public and private sectors. Executing public art successfully requires understanding best practices and the range of tools available to communities, from murals and sculptures to artist residencies and creative placemaking initiatives that leverage arts and culture to shape memorable, people-centered places.
This half-day event will showcase inspiring projects from Westchester and beyond, examine the role of public art and creative placemaking in economic development, downtown revitalization, and community building, and create opportunities for peer learning among agencies throughout the region. The event is designed for both public and private organizations, whether they are experienced in public art or exploring how arts-based placemaking strategies can be integrated into future projects.

What's Possible: Types of Artworks and Programs
Public art is far broader than a sculpture in a plaza. This session surveys the range of what public art can be—from permanent installations and integrated architectural works to temporaryprojects. Participants will gain a working vocabulary for the field and a clearer sense of whichapproaches best fit their goals, sites, budgets, and communities.
Who Does the Work: Decision-Making and Processes
Successful public art begins with clear roles and a defined process. This session introduces the frameworks that guide who makes decisions—from selecting artists to approving designs—and how to structure a process that is transparent, equitable, and accountable. Participants will learn how governments and developers can establish review panels, involve community voices, and set policies that keep projects moving while protecting the integrity of artistic and public interests.
Beginning with the End in Mind: Preservation and Long-Term Planning
A public artwork's life extends far beyond its installation. This session addresses the often-overlooked responsibilities of stewardship: maintenance, conservation, funding for long-term care, and planning for a work's eventual repair, relocation, or retirement. Participants will learn why these considerations belong at the start of a project — not the end — and how thoughtful planning protects both the investment and the public's trust.
