Calling all visual arts, poets, and jazz lovers!

Experience the energy and spontaneity of live improvised jazz and poetry as inspiration for your own creative expression. As musicians and poets perform and create in real time throughout the gallery, you are invited to create alongside them—responding through poetry, creative writing, painting, drawing, sketching, or mixed-media art as the music and spoken word unfold.

Led by renowned poet and 'Medicine Woman of Jazz,' Golda Solomon, joined by Christopher Dean Sullivan, Jazz Griot/Bassist and JD Parran, International Reed Player - members of the Po'Jazz Ensemble - this immersive experience offers a unique opportunity to experience improvisational jazz and poetry in the moment.

FOR YOU THE AUDIENCE

This is not an instructor-led workshop, but a self-guided experience where you are free to create and interpret the performance in your own way and at your own pace. There are no rules, no expectations, and no prior experience required.

Please Note: Art materials will not be provided. Participants are asked to bring their own supplies.

Suggested SuppliesFor visual artists: Charcoal, graphite pencils, colored pencils, gouache, watercolors, brushes, paper, sketchbooks, canvas, and/or easels. Please do not bring oil or acrylic paints.

For poets: Bring your voice, your words, and your original poems.

ABOUT PO'JAZZ

Po'Jazz is a pioneering poetry-and-jazz performance and improvisation series that merges spoken word with live jazz music. Founded in 1999 by poet/curator Golda Solomon, it has featured a rotating roster of musicians, poets, and word artists, responding to one another in real time without a script. Christopher Dean Smith, Jazz Criot/Bassist and JD Parran, Reeds, complete this evening's trio. The Po'Jazz series originally launched at the Hudson Valley Writers Center in 1999 and spent several years at the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City. Po'Jazz is available to take on the road to art venues, libraries, educational facilities, colleges and jazz clubs, and has a dedicated home residency at the Blue Door Art Center (BDAC) in Yonkers, New York 4th Sunday afternoons, March-November. ABOUT GOLDA SOLOMON

Golda Solomon, First Poet Laureate, Yonkers N.Y., poet-in-residence Blue Door Art Center, C.U.N.Y Adjunct Associate Professor, spoken word performer, creator of Po’Jazz (Poetry in Partnership with Jazz) and founding member of The Jazz & Poetry Choir Collective. Solomon created and facilitates ekphrastic creative writing workshops.Under the banner of JazzJaunts she also gigs around NYC and goes on the road with her poetry and a fabulous roster of jazz musicians. Golda has received grants and honorariums from Arts Westchester, Poets & Writers, the NEA Yonkers Initiative, Rotary Club, Blue Door Art Center, Groundwork HV and Hudson Park that help with her commitment to effecting change in Yonkers through the arts. Solomon is a published poet with her collections, Flatbush Cowgirl and Medicine Woman of Jazz and CDs, Po’Jazz: Takin’ It to the Hollow, First Set, Jazz Riffs, We Were Here ( Jazz & Poetry Choir Collective) and is currently at work on her newest collection, “You Can’t Take Brooklyn Out Of The Girl"
