The Queensland Government has proposed new laws to limit community objection rights to mining.
The 20th of October is a State Wide Day of Action! Communities across Queensland will stand together to protect our rights to object to inappropriate mines.
Join CAFNEC to send a strong message to government: Our rights matter, and we want a peaceful future.
Wednesday 20th October: 730am - 830am
Peace Park Cairns Esplanade
Bring a plate to share and your coffee in your in hand
Hear more about this bill and what's at stake
Kid-friendly - we will be writing letters to our local MPs, colouring pens, paper and opinions
These new laws will mean that to object to a mine, you will have to live within 125km of that mine, and even if you do live within that proximity, the environment minister has the power to decide whether your objection is valid, with no criteria to say what is a valid objection. We know that mines have far reaching impacts far beyond where the mining occurs, and all those who have the potential to be impacted by these mines should have the rights to object.
Here in Far North Queensland we are seeing accelerating mineral mining to supply the USA Department of War. In other parts of Queensland we see increased mining of coal and gas, perpetuating climate change which is having catastrophic impacts for our region as sever weather events and sea level rise impact our communities.
