Peculiar, Random, Odd, Mysteries and More!
Our shop's PROMM events are held during the summer, on the evening of the fourth Wednesday of the month.
More About the Talk: America’s first covered bridge once crossed the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and at one time the Commonwealth had over 1,500 covered bridges. Today approximately 209 authentic covered bridges remain, more than any other state. They are sometimes called “kissing bridges” because young men would steal kisses from their sweethearts while crossing them. This presentation will look at types of covered bridges, laws protecting covered bridges, the destruction of covered bridges by fire, flood, or vehicles. We will also look at some of our covered bridges that are said to be haunted.
More About the Speaker: Mark Podvia has visited and photographed almost all of the surviving authentic covered bridges in Pennsylvania, as well as all of the surviving authentic covered bridges in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. He has also visited one of the two surviving authentic covered bridges in New Jersey and more than 50 such bridges in Ohio. Mark is the author of “Uncovering the History and Law of Pennsylvania’s Covered Bridges,” published in the 2024 Pennsylvania Bar Association Quarterly. A regular speaker at Mechanicsburg Mystery Bookshop, he is the author of The Strange Case of Dr. Paul Schœppe.
Light snacks will be provided.
