About this Event

About this lecture
Climate Change: As if people mattered

At a time when global climate goals can feel increasingly out of reach, how can decision-makers balance the needs of both people and nature to deliver meaningful environmental and social change?

This topic will be explored by University of Gloucestershire’s Professor Matt Reed at his inaugural lecture, taking place on 9 July 2026 at Park Campus.

Reflecting on his research exploring the connections between environmental improvement, social change and communities, Professor Reed will explore different approaches to achieving change, focusing particularly on ideas that emphasise human flourishing and community development.

Using examples from organic farming, renewable energy, urban agriculture and environmental programmes, Professor Reed will demonstrate how positive action towards sustainability can create tangible benefits for both people and nature, offering hope to those seeking solutions to the urgent challenges of climate change.

The speaker
Professor Reed joined the Countryside and Community Research Institute (CCRI) in 2009 and has since led a diverse portfolio of research projects spanning food marketing, commercial fishing, market towns, urban food systems, smartphone applications and forestry initiatives.

Alongside his research activity, Matt has represented the CCRI on the Wales ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership and served on the University’s Academic Board. In 2021, he was appointed Director of the CCRI, before becoming Head of Research for the University in 2024.

He was awarded a Professorship in 2025, with a focus on emerging climate citizenships.
