Professor Vangelis Tsiligkiris' Inaugural Lecture

Overview

In this lecture, Professor Vangelis Tsiligkiris sets out a practical, forward-looking view of what a “co-created university” could look like. Drawing on his work on educational quality, informed by Biggs’ three-stage learning model, the THRIVE framework for inclusive transnational education, strategic insights from Porter’s Diamond, and research on skills for the future of work, he explores three connected questions. How can universities design advanced personalised learning that is genuinely enabling and meaningful at scale? How can global partnerships be built on inclusion, legitimacy, and shared value? How can curricula develop durable capabilities for an artificial intelligence-shaped workplace? The lecture closes with emerging evidence on how artificial intelligence tools influence study practices and knowledge recall, and outlines a next research agenda focused on learning to learn and learner recalibration to support learning that lasts.

Biography:

Vangelis Tsiligkiris is Professor of International Education and Head of the Department of Accounting and Finance at Nottingham Business School, Nottingham Trent University. He is an academic leader with more than 20 years’ experience across UK and international higher education, with expertise in internationalisation strategy, transnational education (TNE) and inclusive learning design.

Vangelis is internationally recognised for research and policy work in TNE, internationalisation and higher education strategy, alongside a strong focus on inclusive pedagogy and the responsible use of AI to enhance learning, assessment and knowledge retention. His work brings together higher education strategy with applied AI and digital capabilities, translating advances in machine learning and generative AI into practical approaches for curriculum design, assessment practice and student skills development.

He has published in peer-reviewed higher education journals and authored policy and sector reports for international organisations and national bodies, including major British Council and Universities UK International projects on the value, demand and local impact of UK TNE.

His work has informed policy and university strategy across more than 20 countries through commissioned research and strategic initiatives, shaping recommendations on UK global engagement and emerging approaches to TNE models and data.

He is the founder and co-convenor of the TNE Hub, an international network connecting researchers and practitioners (650+ members across 20+ countries), and the creator of the TNE Impact repository, which documents how TNE partnerships contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through case studies.

Vangelis is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, contributes to sector engagement through external quality evaluation as a member of the advisory board of The European Association for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ENQA), and currently serves as Chair of CABS’ International Committee.
