From Weighing Molecules to Solving Agricultural Problems With Multidisciplinary Approaches
About this Event

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Andy Gill will explore how his doctoral studies helped pioneer a new measurement technology in mass spectrometry, before outlining how knowledge of this fundamental analytical technique has underpinned a career spanning bioanalytical chemistry, molecular biology, and applied science.

Professor Andy Gill will begin in the mid 1990s, with his training in the remarkable power of mass spectrometry: the ability to “weigh molecules” to unlock their secrets.

From probing protein misfolding in neurodegenerative disease to developing precision diagnostics for livestock health, his work demonstrates how molecular insights translate into real-world impact.

The lecture will showcase examples from agri-tech and med-tech sectors, including innovations in disease mechanisms, AI-driven yield forecasting, and animal welfare.

These stories illustrate how analytical biochemistry, combined with creative technology and cross-disciplinary collaboration, can address global challenges in sustainability, food security, and animal health.

Ultimately, the talk celebrates the journey from molecules to meaningful solutions - where science meets society – and highlights what the future may hold.

Biography

Dr Andrew C. Gill is Associate Dean for Research in the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences at Nottingham Trent University, where he leads the School’s research & innovation strategy and champions cross-disciplinary collaboration. Andy’s career spans more than two decades at the interface of science, technology, and sustainability, with a focus on applying cutting-edge approaches to real-world challenges in agriculture, animal health, and environmental resilience.

After completing his BSc in Medicinal Chemistry and PhD in bioanalytical chemistry at the University of Warwick, Andy built an international reputation in protein chemistry, molecular biology and proteomics, leading a major research programme in Livestock Neurobiology at the Roslin Institute and later driving commercial science initiatives at the University of Lincoln. His research work has attracted over £15 million in competitive funding, including projects on precision crop management, disease mechanisms & diagnostics, and sustainable food systems.

Andy’s most recent research explores transformative technologies in the industrial agri-tech sector, from AI-driven crop forecasting to genetically-edited potatoes, reflecting his passion for innovation that delivers societal and environmental impact. He has collaborated widely with industry, government, and other academic institutions, including pioneering partnerships to improve sustainability in farming and biodiversity conservation.

Beyond research leadership, Andy is committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and fostering partnerships that bridge academia and industry, for example through a directorship of CUPGRA, a potato research Community Interest Company.
