Professor Andrew Drakeley - Personal finance education, 2026

Andrew Drakeley MD FRCOG, has worked full-time as an NHS Consultant Gynaecologist and Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine & Surgery at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital since 2005. He is Liverpool born and bred, being educated at the Liverpool Blue Coat School and Liverpool University Medical School (1989-94). In 1997-98, he worked in busy Obstetric & Gynaecology units in South Africa: Coronation Hospital, Johannesburg, and Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, which were challenging and rewarding in equal measures. Returning to the Mersey O&G rotation, after obtaining his MRCOG qualification, he undertook a 3-year fellowship in reproductive medicine in Liverpool, being awarded his MD in 2003 (recurrent mid-trimester miscarriage), followed by completion of specialty training (CCST) and securing a Consultant post in 2005. He has introduced several new services to Liverpool during his consultancy.

Throughout his training, Andrew was interested in medical politics, being appointed to Chair both the RCOG national junior doctors committee, as well as the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges group, attending the Councils of both organisations. He has also served on the BMA’s Consultant Committee, RCOG Council as Member’s representative, and Vice Chair of the Subspecialty Training Committee. At a local level, Andrew has held leadership roles such as Hewitt Fertility Centre clinical governance lead, Consultant in charge and Clinical Director. He has been the Liverpool Women’s BMA representative, Chaired the Medical Staff Committee, been the Divisional Clinical Director for Gynaecology and acting Deputy Medical Director. He is currently the Clinical Lead for Gynaecology for Merseyside & Cheshire ICB.

Andrew maintains a clinical research interest, especially in the areas of infertility and miscarriage, with 59 citations on Pubmed (2026). He holds an Honorary Clinical Associate Professorship with the University of Liverpool, is currently a Visiting Professor to Ulster University and has been a Visiting Professor to Guadalajara University, and an honorary Senior Lecturer to Edge Hill University, where he oversaw both the MCh (O&G) and MSc in Fertility Practice degrees. He has co-written national (management of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) and European guidelines (medically assisted reproduction in patients with a viral infection/disease).

Andrew is married with 5 children. Outside of work, he holds a Shodan in Goju-ryu karate (first degree black belt) and Captain’s one of the Sunday teams at the Liverpool Cricket Club.

It is with great pride to be elected President of the Liverpool Medical Institution. It might, at first glance sound strange to hold an inaugural Presidential lecture on the subject of personal finance education. By way of explanation, in 2023, when his two elder sons reached the age of maturity, whilst transferring the diligently saved Christmas and birthday cash gifts to them, there was a realisation that maybe there was a better way to invest for their longer-term futures. A lot of reading, researching and watching of many hours of YouTube videos has resulted in a compilation slide set that is not taught in schools, economic degrees or accountancy. As colleagues are from different job roles, pay grades, ages and stages in life, it is hoped that there will be some learning opportunities for everyone, if only to provoke discussion, rather than definitive investment advice.

The Presidential lecture programme for 2026-27 will be ‘medicine with a twist’. LMI are delighted to introduce talks by local doctors on varying topics such as the martial arts, wildlife photography, elite sports, medical student prize evening, high impact neck injuries, primary care, nephrology medical management, history of medicine, advanced surgery, role or religion in the modern day, look back at changes in medical training over the last 70 years, followed by a gala dinner. Other talks may be added.
