Summary
The Mamluk sultanate extended over Egypt and Syria from 1250 to 1517. It managed to defeat the crusaders, mongols and claimed in the fifteenth century even the overlordship over Cyprus. It could survive for so long as it proved to be open to adjustment, technical innovations and incorporations of different cultural practices. It managed to do so as the Mamluk sultanate used spatial configurations of knowledge networks and practices and put them to the use of their sultanate. They were so successful to impress European visitors as well so that the image of the Mamluks became very popular in European art and Mamluks on the other hand looked out for European technology. The presentation will therefore use a histoire croisée approach to show these transfer processes from and into the Mamluk sultanate. Knowledge circulation, defined as transcultural exchange, can also be researched via the material culture involved. In the presentation this will be shown using the transfer of military technology or the presentation of the Mamluks in Italian art.
