1/2 Day Hike Options
Eugenia Mine
This trail is 2.7 miles out and back, and rated easy-moderate with 508 ft of elevation gain and 508 ft of elevation loss. Start at the Longs Peak trailhead and wind up through the Tahosa Valley. Eugenia Mine “produced more dreams than gold” proclaims a sign along this trail. The mine itself was active in the 1800s but has been sealed since the 1960s. This trail takes you to what remains of the historic mine and outbuildings, such as an old miner’s cabin. Learn about mining and conservation history during this hike.

Sprague Lake Loop
This 2.7 mile loop is rated easy with 243 ft of elevation gain and loss. Starting at the Sprague Lake Trailhead, this loop route offers stunning views of Sprague Lake then winds through the surrounding forest. Unlike most other lakes in Rocky Mountain National Park, Sprague Lake was created by Abner Sprague damming Boulder Brook in 1914. Abner Sprague wanted to create fishing opportunities for guests at his newly completed lodge. Eventually, the park service bought the lodge and lake. The lodge was torn down in 1958, however the lake remains. Enjoy views of mountain vistas, glacier-deposited rocks, and towering conifers on this hike.
