Short summary

A lot of animated films ask you to choose a side.
Princess Mononoke does something more honest and more difficult.
The forest is not simply innocent.
Industry is not simply evil.
The gods are sacred and terrifying.
The humans are desperate, wounded, clever, hungry, and often half-right.
That is what makes this movie still feel alive.
It is not a clean environmental fable. It is a war between ways of living: nature, technology, survival, labour, rage, beauty, violence, and the impossible wish to build something without breaking something else.
This is the discussion companion to the August 7 public movie outing, but you do not need to have attended that screening. Just watch the film beforehand.
Not trivia.
Not “Miyazaki is perfect” worship.
Not plot-summary sludge.
A real conversation about what happens when every side has a wound, every answer has a cost, and peace is not the same thing as innocence.

• “Is Lady Eboshi a villain, a realist, a liberator, a destroyer, or all of those at once?”
• “What does the film understand about rage that simpler stories usually miss?”
• “Is Ashitaka wise, naive, morally clear, or just the only person refusing to become possessed by hatred?”
• “Does the film believe coexistence is possible, or only necessary?”
• “What felt more frightening: human violence, divine violence, or the damage done by people trying to survive?”
• “Why does this movie make easy answers feel dishonest?”

How the afternoon will go

We’ll start with one question:
“What side of the conflict did you feel yourself sympathizing with, even when it made you uncomfortable?”
Then we’ll stay close to the film: San, Ashitaka, Lady Eboshi, Iron Town, the forest, the gods, rage, labour, violence, and the strange moral pressure of a movie that refuses to give us a clean escape.
Open spoilers are fine.
Come having watched the movie recently enough to argue with your own memory of it.
No lore-flexing.
No studio trivia detours.
No pretending this is just a beautiful fantasy movie.
