About this Event
Dating back to the turn of the 20th century, Son originated in the Cuban countryside before migrating to Havana. As the most popular style to emerge from the island, it serves as the primary foundation for the modern blend of Latin styles known today as Salsa.
The ensemble’s journey began in 2004 when guitarist Paul D’Alessio traveled to Cuba with the Brunswick-Trinidad Sister City Association. Captivated by the local culture, D’Alessio mastered the tres—a native Cuban guitar—and formed Primo Cubano to preserve and share this urbanized folk tradition.
The quintet features a lineup of seasoned musicians dedicated to authentic interpretation:
- Marc Chillemi (Trumpet/Percussion/Vocals): A veteran of the Latin scene, Chillemi provides melodic flair and traditional coro (chorus) vocals.
- Lenny Hatch (Percussion): With over 20 years of experience, Hatch drives the rhythm on congas and bongos, inspired by the legendary Mongo Santamaría.
- Eric Winter (Lead Vocals/Maracas): Combining a lifelong singing career with extensive Spanish study, Winter serves as the band’s sonero, responding to the chorus with improvised lyrics.
- Duane Edwards (Upright Bass): A graduate of the University of Maine at Augusta, Edwards provides the driving tumbao bass patterns that make the genre so danceable.
