Preserving Traditional Cultural Landscapes in the United States
About this Event
Native American tribes and archaeologists share a common interest in preserving significant terrains. This lecture by Brian Daniels of the University of Pennsylvania and President of the Archaeological Institute of America is offered in collaboration with AIA’s New York Society and Chapter.
Professor Daniels focuses upon the Shasta Indian Nation, documenting the Kikaceki traditional cultural landscapes, demonstrating vital historic links between the Tribe and its ancestral homeland.
Following negotiations with the State of California in 2024, Governor Gavin Newsom agreed that Kikaceki’s 2,820 acres would be returned. This includes places sacred to the Shasta, serving as a reminder to maintain this territory both for its people and for future generations.
