About this Event
The 106-acre Nelson Woods preserve, located in Midland on the Tittabawassee River, is protected by the Little Forks Conservancy to protect water quality and native wildlife habitat. This preserve is currently closed due to parking lot and trail construction, but volunteers will be allowed access during the duration of the event. This is a great way to get a behind the scenes look at the Conservancy's newest preserve! Join us on February 26th, from 9am-12:00pm, as we continue to develop this natural area by removing invasive species to restore habitat and healthy ecosystems.
What weβll be doing: Volunteers will help restore the native habitat of Nelson Woods by manually cutting down invasive species like autumn olive and buckthorn. Invasive species are those that are non-native to local ecosystems and can be harmful to the environment. Conservancy staff will also be applying herbicide to invasive cut stumps to prevent future growth. Those under 15 must have a parent present or a chaperone. This event is recommended for ages 10 and up.
What to bring: Gloves, water, safety glasses, and loppers and/or handsaws. We will be working outside in snow and colder temperatures, so please dress accordingly for the event and weather. Closed toed shoes are required. The Little Forks Conservancy will provide tools and safety glasses to those who need them.
Location, Directions, and Time: The Nelson Woods preserve is located on the corner of Solomon and Glen Road in Midland, Michigan 48640. Volunteers will park along the road - either on Solomon or Glen Road. An LFC staff member will be waiting at the trailhead to direct volunteers.
