About this Event

Join Children of Incarcerated Caregivers, Women’s Refugee Commission, and the Human Rights Center at the University of Minnesota Law School for this timely conversation with experts on the challenges of protecting the rights of pregnant people, children, and families in the context of immigration enforcement. The event will feature a presentation by Mr. Gehad Madi, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, and a panel discussion with diverse medical, legal, and policy experts.

To open the session, Special Rapporteur Madi will present his recent thematic report on children’s right to family life and family unity in the context of migration and asylum (A/81/255) and share relevant upcoming priorities for his mandate. Then, a moderated round-table discussion will feature experts working on these issues from their fields of maternal and pediatric health, perinatal psychiatry, law, and policy, including:

  • Julie Matonich, JD, Co-Founder and Board President, Children of Incarcerated Caregivers
  • Zain Lakhani, PhD, JD, Director of Migrant Rights and Justice, Women's Refugee Commission
  • Dr. Helen Kim, MD, Reproductive and Perinatal Psychiatrist, Co-founder and Director of the Hennepin Healthcare Mother-Baby Program and Redleaf Center for Family Healing, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota

  • Marie-Fatima Hyacinthe, PhD, Fellow, Yale Global Health Justice Partnership

This is a hybrid event and requires registration. In-person registration will close Tuesday, October 20, at 3:00pm ET. Space is limited.
