Practicing Futures
About this Event
Queer, trans, Black, Indigenous, people of color, working class, immigrants, people with disabilities have always been futurists. Asking the world to imagine futures without prisons, police brutality, and borders. Rebuilding and reimagining, sometimes without any other choice.
Practicing Futures is a 3-hour skills-building workshop for artists, storytellers, and creatives interested in building visions of the future. Led by artist and educator Bianca Nozaki-Nasser, the session draws on elements of science fiction, social movements, and speculative object-making as tools for forging futures.
Participants will leave with new creative outputs and an expanded set of practices for dreaming beyond moments of crisis, toward the worlds they want to live in.
Come ready to imagine. Leave ready to build.
___________
Bianca Nozaki-Nasser (she/they) is a Japanese-Lebanese-Syrian artist and educator. Bianca’s work is rooted in social practice and has spanned across immersive audio video installations, textiles, speculative objects, and community engagement programs. Using time as a material, she invites collective wrecking and reckoning, exploring the tension between building new worlds and redecorating old ones. Bianca is also the founder of Practicing Futures, a community creative lab dedicated to reclaiming and reimagining the future.
This workshop is part of the programming for our current show, Into The Plursiverse.
This programming is made possible with generous support from the Accelerate Resilience Los Angeles (ARLA) Arts Fund.
