About this Event

Join the TCV – Edinburgh Biodiversity Action Team for a hands-on practical conservation session at North Junction Street Park, where we’ll be expanding a developing wildflower area and creating new wildlife-friendly features.

TCV has been working with partners to help create and manage a new wildflower area within the park, and this session will focus on the next stage of enhancement. In a more shaded part of the site, we’ll be creating a stumpery and associated wildlife habitats to improve structural diversity and provide shelter for a wide range of species.

🌱 What we’ll be doing

Activities on the day will include:

  • Creating a stumpery using timber and root plates
  • Developing associated habitats (e.g. refuges for invertebrates, amphibians and fungi)
  • Planting shade‑tolerant native plants
  • Sowing a specially selected shaded wildflower mix
  • Learning about how shaded habitats support biodiversity in urban greenspaces

All tasks will be guided by TCV staff, with tools, materials and training provided.

👋 Who can take part?
  • Suitable for adults and young people aged 16+
  • No prior experience needed — beginners very welcome
  • A great opportunity for anyone interested in conservation, gardening for wildlife, or gaining practical experience

🧤 What to bring
  • Sturdy footwear (e.g. boots or old trainers)
  • Weather‑appropriate clothing (we work outdoors in most conditions)
  • Packed lunch, snacks and water

♿ Accessibility

This session will take place in a shaded section of the park, with some uneven ground and manual handling involved. Tasks can be adapted where possible — please get in touch via email if you’d like to discuss access needs or support.

📍 Meeting Point

We’ll meet at North Junction Street Park (exact meeting point details will be emailed to booked participants shortly before the session).

🌼 Why it matters

By creating diverse habitats like stumperies and shaded wildflower areas, we’re helping to support urban wildlife, improve ecological connectivity, and enhance this greenspace for both people and nature. We're working in partnership with the City of Edinburgh's Thriving Green Spaces as park of the Linking Leith Project.
