About this Event
Join YorSpace and York Community Energy (YCE) for a special screening of - an inspiring documentary about communities coming together to take control of energy and build a fairer, greener future. The film has been described as “inspirational and uplifting” and as a vision for “community-owned sustainable energy alternatives across Britain.”
This event marks the launch of a new collaboration between YorSpace and YCE as part of YCE’s city-wide plans for community-owned energy in York, including exploring solar energy use at Lowfield Green Housing Co-operative in Acomb — a YorSpace project.
The evening will begin with a film screening from 6.30pm to 8pm, followed by a discussion on the film, hear more about the Solar City York project, and explore what community-owned energy could mean for York.
Whether you’re curious about renewable energy, community-led development, or practical local climate action, this is a chance to be part of the conversation.
Film Synopsis
Two artists in Walthamstow set out to take their street off the grid, kickstarting a solar-powered energy revolution.
Inspired by lockdown mutual aid initiatives, artist-activists Hilary Powell and Dan Edelstyn decided to turn their street into an energy-generating powerhouse – a prototype for a new way of living, with the hope of galvanising a wider push towards sustainable alternatives.
Directed by the duo, POWER STATION charts their turbulent journey, from pitching the idea to their neighbours and sleeping on the roof of their home, to raising finance and launching a bid for a Christmas number one single.
By turns funny and heartwarming, Powell and Edelstyn’s film is a vibrant portrait of their local neighbourhood, and a charming testament.

Their Solar City York project launched in 2024, working with local partner organisations to install community-owned solar on rooftops around the city. They are aiming to launch their first community share offer to fund the first installations in 2026, giving local people the chance to own their share of a cleaner energy future for York.
