About this Event
THROWING DAY CLASS (SATURDAY OR SUNDAY)
WELCOME TO OUR EVER-POPULAR THROWING DAY WORKSHOP!

ABOUT THIS CLASS

This class teaches you the preliminary skills to throw pots on a pottery wheel.

In this one-day workshop, in a small class, you will work on your own pottery wheel to shape clay, with the skillful instruction of our pottery teachers, who will guide you to learn throwing techniques, and craft your own small pots.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course will teach you invaluable pottery skills including:

- how to properly handle clay

- working with pottery tools

- centering and pulling a pot on a wheel

- utilizing shaping techniques

- taking your pot off your wheel

You may take as many of your pots home with you as you like (please note the pots will airdry over a few days and may then be used for display - they will not be glazed or watertight). Please bring small boxes (like Tupperware or cardboard) to bring your creations home with you.

You will also be able to recycle the clay in these pieces at home if you want to make something new and we will send you links to our tutorials with suggestions of what to make and how to decorate your pieces, at no extra cost.

If you would like to have your pot glazed, you may book one of our 2-hour Glazing Workshops and learn the basics of glazing techniques. In this instance, we will keep one pot from your workshop for you to glaze, and you may still take the other unfired, unglazed pots home with you. Please book Glazing Workshop at the time of booking.

We really hope you will enjoy your time on the wheel as much as we enjoy teaching it!

If you would like to give this Workshop as a gift please look at our Gift Cards options here.

CANCELLATION POLICY

Please ensure that you, or the individual you are gifting the workshop to, can attend the workshop.

Unfortunately, we are not in the position to offer refunds for our workshops. We can reschedule your workshop if you notify us 3 weeks before your workshop.

However, you may transfer your workshop booking to someone else, if you yourself cannot attend. Please email us as soon as possible before the course with the name and contact information of the person taking your place.

FAQs

When will my pot be ready for the Glazing Workshop? Please allow at least 4 weeks between your Throwdown Workshop and participating in the Glazing Workshop, as we will need to bisque-fire your pot, prior to it being glazed. Please sign your pot as instructed by the teacher. Please note, in rare instances, pieces don’t survive the kiln firing and acquire damage - this is beyond any potter’s control. Should this happen to your pot, we will supply you with a blank pot which you may glaze at the workshop.

What should I wear/bring? Your clothes and shoes will get wet and dirty from clay splashes, so please wear comfortable clothes that you do not mind getting messy. Please bring your own apron and a hand towel.

You may take as many of your pots home with you as you like, so it is advised to bring small boxes (like Tupperware or cardboard) to transport your creations home with you.

Who is this course for? This pottery workshop will suit beginners looking for an introduction to working with clay, or those who have worked with clay before and would like a simple refresher.

Is there an age limit for the Workshop? This course is generally for people aged 18 and above. A teenager over 15 may attend if they are accompanied by an adult. Please let us know in advance.

What's the day like? You will be welcomed by your teacher and brought to one of our light-filled classrooms. Please let us know if you have a mobility issue, so we can accommodate you in the downstairs classroom. Each participant will have access to their own pottery wheel, workstation, and tools for the duration of the workshop. All the materials needed for the workshop will be provided. The workshop ends by tidying up class and equipment.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the workshop? The nearest Luas Red Line stop is 'Four Courts', (a five minute walk away) and many bus routes service Stop 1479, located on Ormond Quay, at the junction with Capel Street. You'll also find a Dublin Bikes stand at each of these locations. Due to our City Centre location, on-street parking immediately outside the building is limited. However, there is pay and display in the vicinity and a large car park nearby at Jervis Shopping Centre and beside the Fruit and Vegetable Markets.

Are there any Health and Safety issues? Please note, you will be working on a pottery wheel in a bent position, which might put some strain on your neck, back, or wrists. Please, consult your doctor if you have had back, neck, wrist, or any other injuries.

Please keep your hair tied up and your nails short.

Where can I contact you with any questions? You can email us at [email protected].

Thank you!
