June 2023 marked the 50th publication anniversary of Awakenings (1973), a medical bestseller in which Dr Oliver Sacks documented the lives of patients who were forgotten survivors of the encephalitis lethargia pandemic of the early 20th century. The book also documents the emergence of the 'Romantic' scientist in Sacks as he finds the writerly voice that has since earned him the title of the 'Poet Laureate of Medicine'. One of the first academic conferences devoted to Oliver Sacks's clinical and authorial practice, Awakenings at 50 charts the debts and legacies of this epoch-making book.
