Speaker: Jan Carroll
Learn about Jan's passions: taking care of orchards in parks and vacant lots -- and teaching others how to sustainably grow fruit.
Jan Carroll is a retired obstetrics nurse and citizen orchardist.
She began working as volunteer with the city orchards planted in 2015 after spending 25 years as a volunteer/employee at Growing Power.
Her passion is vacant lot community orchards, and she has been caring for the fruit trees in 16 “orphaned” orchards in the Harambee, Amani, and Midtown neighborhoods since 2017 as well as assisting the churches and groups who sponsor them.
Her focus is on caring for the orchards in a sustainable manner and on teaching orchard management to anyone who Is interested.
She has particular experience in pruning and the use of non-pesticide insect management and uses the permaculture philosophy as the basis of her orchard management.
