Portico Ubuntu: Diaspora Dine & Discussion
About this Event
Join us for an unforgettable evening as Carol Ann Whitehead, Chair of The Portico Library's Public Programme Committee, welcomes you to the inaugural Diaspora Dine & Discussion in the iconic Reading Room at The Portico Library.
Marking the centenary of Black History Month with elegance, conversation and exceptional hospitality, this exclusive event brings together heritage, food and community in one of Manchester's most historic literary settings.
The evening begins with a drinks reception beneath the magnificent dome, where guests will be welcomed by Carol Ann. As guest curator, Carol Ann will introduce Ledger of Liberation – Portico Ubuntu, offering guests an insight into the exhibition, its featured contributors and the stories that celebrate resilience, identity and collective achievement.
Guests will then be invited into the beautifully transformed Members' Reading Room for a specially curated dining experience. Carol Ann will introduce an exclusive menu created by The Portico Kitchen, inspired by the rich culinary traditions and cultural origins of the African diaspora. Later in the evening, she will welcome the evening's lead chef, Pete Moody, whose menu celebrates heritage through contemporary cuisine. It is a fitting tribute to the remarkable legacy of the Portico Kitchen, which has been serving food since 1806.
Back in 2025 Portico Kitchen brought guests together for a memorable dining experience celebrating the 80th anniversary of the 5th Pan-African Congress. The occasion provided an opportunity to honour the historic significance of the Congress while bringing people together through food, culture, conversation, and community.
The evening's special guest, Councillor Hilaria Asumu, will share her vision for strengthening communities through connection, leadership and collaboration, reflecting on the importance of building lasting relationships across cultures and generations.
More than a dinner, Diaspora Dine & Discussion is an invitation to gather around the table to share ideas, celebrate culture and honour the enduring legacy of Black history.
Inspired by heritage. Rooted in community.
