About this Event
Live in West Oakland? Want to grow as a leader for environmental justice and climate justice? Check out our Port 101 series! We’re zeroing in on West Oakland’s most notorious neighbor–the Port of Oakland–and sharing skills around advocacy, air quality data, environmental health, and decarbonization.
The Port of Oakland is the biggest pollution source in West Oakland, a multi-million dollar enterprise, and a huge source of jobs across Northern California. Over the past twenty years, community advocates have fought for transparency and accountability at the Port, with big results. They won clean air protections, local hiring, and better communication between the Port and West Oakland residents.
But port pollution still hurts West Oaklanders’ health, and informed, engaged neighbors have an essential role to play in creating a safer and healthier Port. If you’ve been looking to hone your community advocacy skills, the Port of Oakland is a perfect place to start.
This first session is an introduction to the Port and a crash course in one of the most persistent flashpoints between the Port and the surrounding community: truck traffic.
- The Port is technically part of the City of Oakland, but it’s an “autonomous department.” Come find out what that means and how the Port runs.
- Get a rundown on decades of advocacy to get polluting trucks off residential streets.
- Learn how diesel trucks affect our air, and how the hard data backs up residents’ lived experience with truck pollution.
This workshop is funded by Clean Ports, a $322 million investment in zero-emission technology by the Port of Oakland. WOEIP, the West Oakland Cultural Action Network, Black Cultural Zone, and Rose Foundation for Community and Environment are working with the Port to monitor the project and keep the community informed.
