Pollock Bench Traillocated near Fruita, CO, is a primary gateway to the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area and the Black Ridge Canyons Wilderness. It is highly rated for its stunning canyon views, diverse trail options, and reliable accessibility. This easy hike offers the different perspective of being above the canyons with great views of the Grand Valley.
• Pollock Bench Loop (P1)
This is a 6.9 mile (11 km) moderate loop that usually takes about 3–3.5 hours to complete.
• Highlights: Stunning canyon rim views and diverse desert terrain.
• Tip: Hike it counter-clockwise for the best perspectives as you approach the canyon edge.
• Parking & Facilities: The trailhead features a free parking lot with enough space for horse trailers. Public restrooms (outhouse) are available at the parking area.
• Pet Policy: The area is dog-friendly. Dogs are allowed but should be kept under control, especially since the trail is shared with bikers and horseback riders.
• Best Time to Visit: Popular months are April, May, and October. Early morning starts are recommended to avoid the intense desert heat, as there is very little shade on most trails. You are more exposed on this hike. The early part of the hike hits you with most of the climb and the best views of the Grand Valley.
• Fee Information: While the trailhead is generally free, some sections may pass through State Wildlife Areas, which might require a valid hunting or fishing
Pollock Bench Trailhead offers exceptional hiking and horseback riding opportunities in a landscape of colorful intricate cliffs and deep canyons that tell a story shaped by shallow seas, a meandering river systems, and ongoing uplift and erosion. Please stay on designated trails. The National Conservation Area serves as an outdoor museum of the life and people that came before us. Paleontological (dinosaurs) and cultural sites help us understand our past. Please to not remove any materials - help protect your heritage. Enjoy rock art but please do not touch (oils from your hands contribute to deterioration).
