Pokemon: Sealed Constructed: Extended
The Pokémon TCG Expanded format (often referred to as Extended) is a, non-rotating, official competitive format allowing cards from the Black & White series (2011) onwards, plus a regularly updated banned card list to maintain balance. It is characterized by a massive card pool (~10,000+ cards) and faster, more aggressive, combo-heavy gameplay compared to Standard.
Key Features of the Expanded Format:
Card Pool: Covers all expansions from Black & White (2011) to the most recent sets, featuring over a decade of cards.
No Rotation: Unlike Standard, which rotates older sets out yearly, Expanded sets remain legal indefinitely, making it a "stable" format.
Ban List: Because the large card pool allows for highly broken combinations, a separate banned card list is enforced, often restricting cards that allow turn-one wins or extreme hand control.
While Standard is the primary format for most events, Expanded is used for specific regional championships and is available on Pokémon TCG Live.
Standard vs. Expanded:
Standard: Uses only the newest sets (roughly the last 2–3 years) and rotates yearly.
Expanded: Offers a "Wild West" environment with massive strategic depth, making it popular for players with deep collections.
As of the 2026 season, the Expanded format remains largely unchanged, with the Black & White era continuing to act as the boundary for legal cards
