About this Event

This event is a conversation with poet and anthropologist Dr. Nomi Stone, facilitated by Dr. Grace H. Zhou, about the many ways that creative writing can reshape how anthropology is practiced, taught, and shared. Together we will explore how poetry and experimental forms might open new possibilities for ethnography, allowing academics to write with greater attunement, care, and imagination. The discussion will also consider how creative methods can enter the classroom and community, helping students and collaborators find their own voices and challenge the boundaries between scholarship and art. We will also reflect on what it means to work creatively within, alongside, and beyond academic institutions: how writing can travel between universities, publics, and activist spaces, and how anthropologists can build more porous, collaborative forms of knowledge. Blending readings, dialogue, and audience questions, the session invites anyone curious about poetry, ethnography, and the craft of language to explore more expansive futures for anthropology.
