About this Event
Join us for Pocket Power!
Event Location: The Green
Did you know that pockets have a powerful history? During the women’s suffrage movement, Suffragettes highlighted the absence of pockets in women’s clothing as a symbol of their exclusion from politics. Thanks to the Rational Dress Campaign and designers like Coco Chanel, pockets began to appear in women’s fashion . Yet, over a century later, many are still too small… or missing altogether!
In this workshop, participants will learn how to add pockets to their beloved garments. Whether you're interested in sewing kangaroo pockets onto sweaters, attaching patch pockets to jeans or tote bags, or incorporating side-seam pockets into dresses, trousers, or skirts, our aim is to dedicate an evening adding this practical element to our clothing a subtle act of resistance which advocates for gender equality and female empowerment. Bring along something you’d like to adapt, or simply practise the techniques on sample fabric.
