Playing the Long Game: Art after AI and Extinction

Als iemand in staat is om kunst, ecologie en AI op indringende wijze met elkaar te verbinden is het kunstenaar, schrijver en AI-pionier van het eerste uur K Allado-McDowell. Hen stond aan de basis van het Artists + Machine Intelligence programma van Google in 2015, schreef meerdere boeken samen met GPT-3 en was redacteur van The Atlas of Anomalous AI.

Op donderdagavond 10 september komt hen naar MU Hybrid Art House voor een lezing. Vertrekpunt is hun installatie The Known Lost die deel uitmaakt van de huidige MU-expositie Metabolising Time.

The Known Lost is een voorstel voor een grootschalig monument om alle uitgestorven soorten te herdenken, dat de kunstenaar ooit daadwerkelijk in een verlaten marmermijn zou willen realiseren. Hen zal daarbij dieper ingaan op de research en vele aspecten van het monument, dat je ook zou kunnen zien als een representatie van het metaboliseren van de biosfeer.

Volgens hen wordt de huidige maatschappij gekenmerkt door meerdere tijdsbelevingen tegelijk, wat met name iin kunst en technologie scherp tot uitdrukking komt. Verschillende vormen van intelligentie en uitsterven zijn daarbij gekoppeld en dagen uit ons een beeld te vormen van het leven hierna.

Voor en na de lezing is er natuurlijk ook voldoende tijd om de tentoonstelling Metabolising Time te bezoeken, die deze avond extra laat open blijft.

If anyone is capable of making a powerful connection between art, ecology and AI, it is the artist, writer and early AI pioneer K Allado-McDowell. He was one of the founders of Google’s Artists + Machine Intelligence programme in 2015, co-authored several books with GPT-3 and was an editor of The Atlas of Anomalous AI.

On Thursday evening, 10 September, they will give a talk about it at MU Hybrid Art House. Starting point of the talk is their installation The Known Lost, that is part of the current MU exhibition Metabolising Time.

The Known Lost is a proposal for a large-scale monument to commemorate all extinct species, which the artist would one day like to realise in an abandoned marble mine. In doing so, he will explore in greater depth the research and many aspects of the monument, which could also be seen as a representation of the metabolism of the biosphere.

According to them, contemporary society can be characterised by an orientation towards multiple temporalities at once, a phenomenon that one can see expressed both in art and technology. Different forms of intelligence and extinction are intertwined in this context, challenging us to form a vision of the afterlife.

Before and after the lecture, there will of course also be plenty of time to visit the exhibition Metabolising Time, which will remain open late especially for this evening.
