About PLAY 2
Singapore Sketchers is thrilled to announce ”Play 2”, in collaboration with the National Library Board (NLB) of Singapore. Eight unique artists will be featured, sharing their tips and techniques, catered for every sketcher, artist and hobbyist alike. This exciting one day event is designed to share the joys of sketching, to anyone interested to play and have fun, hence the name “Play” was formed. Come PLAY with us!
The event is structured into two morning and afternoon sessions. Each session is led by different artists. Participants are free to choose any of the segments within the session that piques their interests. Please bring along drawing materials to experience the workshop fully.
Session 1 Segments and Speakers
Sketching on Vacation by Frances Theo
Francis Theo, a retired visual merchandiser and ex-store planner with stints in Hong Kong and Bali, now dedicates his time in sketching old, heritage buildings and panoramic scenes. A prolific sketcher, he documents his travels meticulously in his sketchbooks, showcasing his mastery of fountain pen and ink sketching. In his session on “Sketching on Vacation”, Francis will share his approach to capture vacation memories through sketching, emphasizing the key skills and techniques of observation, assimilation, and application. Sketching People on the Go by Don Low
Join Don Low, a full-time faculty member at a local university, a seasoned illustrator and comic artist, for an engaging workshop on “Sketching People on the Go”. With his extensive experience in teaching drawing and painting foundation, he is also interested in figure drawing and environmental concepts. He primarily sketches people as part of his daily observational drawing practice and paints using various traditional mediums like watercolour, acrylics, gouache, and oil. In this workshop, he will share his ideas on sketching people, what key aspects to observe when sketching figures and techniques for creating scenes with composition and depth. Sketching Action Figures by James Leong
An advertising veteran and TVC storyboard artist, James Leong is renowned for his captivating illustrations. Specializing in animals and character designs, James brings his subjects to life with remarkable detail. He will talk you through understanding the basic aspects of the subjects, delivering the essence of basic drawing, and self-evaluation in his session. Sketching Shop Fronts by Alice Lim
Come and learn with Alice, a dedicated professional in regulatory science, in her insightful workshop entitled, “Sketching Shopfronts”. Despite her full-time career not related to art, Alice still manages to pursue art in her free time. She loves sketching shophouses. In her workshop, you will be guided on capturing the unique architectural features of shopfronts, using grills, tiles to create distinctive sketches. Alice will also share techniques on proportions such as using simple shapes and blending lines with watercolour, that will help add depth and vibrancy to your works.
