Get ready for some boot stompin’ and fan poppin’ and join us for a day to celebrate the planet, practice self-care, and learn about the environmental initiatives taking place around Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland at our Brown Faces Green Spaces 6th Annual Earth Day Kickoff – Saturday, April 12th, from 11am to 2:30pm at Marquette Park in Gary!This year’s Planet Palooza theme – “Boots on the Ground: A Reclamation of Earth, Health, & Self ” – focuses on the importance of our health and mental wellness as we care for the air, land, and water around us in our everyday lives. Actively working with our boots on the ground to reclaim health of self and the land we live upon, forging ahead addressing the impacts of climate change and justice with resilience and unity -- taking direct action on the ground locally, rather than from afar.
This family-friendly outdoor celebration features interactive eco-education stations set up by our partner educators to help keep you informed of all the ongoing environmental projects happening around the region. We’ll host outdoor classics like double dutch and jacks, along with our newly added Recycle Relay to help test your knowledge about proper recycling techniques.
Or kick your boots off, and your feet up in the Digital Detox Zone – a screen-free space for reflecting, connecting, and belonging in nature, where guests will also be able to participate in a nature wellness meditation to restore the mind, body, and spirit. Then we’ll get those boots and fans ready to summon in the Summer – line dancing with our fans in the air and our boots on the ground!
Free fans for all guests wearing boots (limit 3 per family while supplies last). Complimentary hot dogs and refreshments will be served till exhausted. A mini farmers market sponsored by Faith Farms will have seasonal vegetables available for the pickins. Mary’s Dorados will be on site serving up authentic Mexican tacos and sides for purchase.

[The day will begin with our Marquette Beach Shoreline Cleanup at 10am to help raise awareness about how litter, plastic, and industrial waste affect our local waterways and our health. Sign-in begins at 9:15am at Shelter #2 – gloves and bags provided. Morning refreshments will be served.]
