Placemaking Through Heritage in Welsh Towns and Cities

Across Wales, towns and cities are increasingly turning to heritage as a catalyst for regeneration, identity, and community renewal. Historic buildings, industrial landscapes, marketplaces, waterfronts and civic spaces are being reimagined not simply as reminders of the past, but as foundations for vibrant and sustainable futures.

This event will explore how heritage-led regeneration can support placemaking in towns and smaller urban centres, drawing lessons from Welsh cities and communities that have used culture, architecture and local identity to reshape public life and economic development.

Through presentations, discussion and case studies, the event will examine key questions including:

• What can small towns learn from Welsh cities?
• How can heritage-led regeneration support placemaking?
• What role should heritage buildings play within the new placemaking agenda?
• What are the main challenges facing heritage-led town regeneration?

The discussion will consider the balance between conservation and change, the reuse of historic buildings, community participation, tourism, public realm improvements, and the role of heritage in creating places where people want to live, work and visit.

Bringing together practitioners, academics, local authorities, heritage organisations and community voices, the event aims to encourage new thinking around how historic environments can help shape resilient, distinctive and people-centred towns for the future.

Ledled Cymru, mae trefi a dinasoedd yn bwrw iddi fwyfwy i ddefnyddio treftadaeth i ysgogi adfywio ac adnewyddu hunaniaeth a chymunedau. Caiff adeiladau hanesyddol, tirweddau diwydiannol, marchnadoedd, glannau a mannau dinesig eu hail-ddychmygu nid yn unig fel atgofion o’r gorffennol, ond fel sylfeini ar gyfer dyfodol mwy bywiog a chynaliadwy.

Bydd y digwyddiad hwn yn ymdrin â sut y gall adfywio o dan arweiniad treftadaeth ategu creu lleoedd mewn trefi a chanolfannau trefol llai, gan fanteisio ar wersi gan ddinasoedd a chymunedau yng Nghymru sydd wedi mynd ati eisoes i ddefnyddio diwylliant, pensaernïaeth a hunaniaeth leol i ail-lywio bywyd cyhoeddus a datblygiad economaidd.

Drwy gyflwyniadau, trafodaethau ac astudiaethau achos, bydd y digwyddiad yn bwrw golwg ar gwestiynau allweddol gan gynnwys:

• Beth all trefi bach ei ddysgu gan ddinasoedd Cymru?
• Sut y gall adfywio o dan arweiniad treftadaeth ategu creu lleoedd?
• Pa rôl ddylai adeiladau treftadaeth ei chwarae fel rhan o’r agenda creu lleoedd newydd?
• Beth yw’r prif heriau y mae adfywio trefi dan arweiniad treftadaeth yn eu hwynebu?

Bydd y drafodaeth yn dwyn i ystyriaeth y cydbwysedd rhwng cadwraeth a newid, ail-ddefnyddio adeiladau hanesyddol, y gymuned yn cymryd rhan, twristiaeth, gwelliannau i dir y cyhoedd a rôl treftadaeth o ran creu lleoedd lle mae pobl yn awyddus i fyw, gweithio ac ymweld â nhw.

Bydd y digwyddiad yn dwyn ynghyd ymarferwyr, academyddion, awdurdodau lleol, mudiadau treftadaeth a lleisiau cymunedol, a’i nod yw annog pobl i feddwl o’r newydd ynghylch sut y gall amgylcheddau hanesyddol helpu i lywio trefi gwydn, unigryw ac sy’n canolbwyntio ar y bobl ar gyfer y dyfodol.
