Instructor: Irene BrammertzIn this hands-on workshop, students will be introduced to the art of pine needle basketry, beginning with one of its most important foundational techniques: the Tenerife wheel. The wheel serves as the starting point for the basket bottom and provides both structure and a beautiful design element.
Participants will learn how to create and stitch a Tenerife wheel, gaining an understanding of tension, spacing, and pattern. Once the wheel is complete, students will build outward using traditional pine needle coiling techniques to form the basket.
Throughout the class, Irene will guide students through each step of the process, offering demonstrations and individualized instruction. Students will explore creative options such as color choices, stitch variations, and the use of beads or other embellishments to personalize their work.
No prior basketry experience is required. This class is well suited for beginners as well as returning students who wish to strengthen their foundational skills while creating a functional and expressive basket.
Students will leave with:
A completed pine needle basket or basket base
A solid understanding of Tenerife wheel construction
Knowledge of basic pine needle coiling techniques
Confidence to continue basketry work independently
For students who discover they want to continue exploring this craft, ongoing weekly pine needle basketry classes may be available. These sessions allow participants to deepen their skills, explore new forms and techniques, and continue working in a supportive, creative environment.
